Poland Imposes Border Controls
His comments underscored the government's firm stance on maintaining security and order at the borders.
While hosting Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof in the capital, Tusk clarified that both border guards and police have a "clear order to react firmly" to any attempts to interfere with the ongoing control measures.
These measures are to be enforced randomly over a 30-day period, with the option to prolong them as needed.
On the German side of the border, informal “citizen patrols” have emerged, reportedly aiming to block the return of non-EU migrants who initially passed through Poland en route to Germany. These self-organized groups have drawn criticism for their actions and objectives.
Last week, the Polish government accused these patrols—some of which are supported by right-wing political figures—of disrupting official operations and promoting false narratives, such as claims that Poland is being “flooded” with migrants.
Individuals in these groups have attempted to inspect identification documents of those crossing the border, raising concerns about legality and impersonation of state functions.
Prime Minister Tusk made it clear that anyone impersonating government authorities or hindering official duties will face strict consequences.
“We will apply adequate measures ... These will include fines, but if necessary, also direct coercion and detention,” he stated, asserting that Poland will "effectively verify each case" to maintain law and order.
