Dutch Minority Government Takes Office After Months of Coalition Talks

(MENAFN) The Netherlands officially inaugurated a minority government on Monday at Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague, over 110 days after the general election held on October 29 last year, according to reports.

Following the dismissal of the previous cabinet, 18 ministers and 10 state secretaries took their oaths of office. The new administration is a coalition formed by Democrats 66 (D66), the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), and the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), finalized on January 30.

Before the swearing-in ceremony, incoming Prime Minister Rob Jetten met King Willem-Alexander to mark the transition to the new government. The cabinet’s first meeting is set for Monday afternoon, during which it will begin drafting its policy program in line with the coalition agreement.

Under this agreement, the government aims to enhance public administration efficiency, accelerate housing construction and the energy transition, implement proactive climate policies, support high-tech industries to boost economic growth, tighten immigration regulations, reform social security and healthcare systems, and strengthen national security and international cooperation.

In the October election, 27 parties contested, with 15 winning seats in the House of Representatives. D66 and the Party for Freedom (PVV) each won 26 seats, VVD secured 22, the GreenLeft-Labour alliance (GroenLinks-PvdA) 20, CDA 18, and JA21 nine.

The coalition announced its plan to form a minority cabinet on January 9, a rare move in Dutch politics. Together, the three parties hold 66 seats in the 150-member House, falling 10 short of a majority and 16 short in the Senate.
