EU Registrations Slide 3.9 Percent Year-on-Year in January

(MENAFN) New passenger car registrations in the European Union slipped 3.9% year-on-year in January, marking another tough start to 2026, the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) reported Tuesday.

Data from the association highlighted a sharp rise in battery-electric vehicle (BEV) adoption, with their market share climbing to 19.3%, up from 14.9% in January 2025. In contrast, the combined share of petrol and diesel vehicles fell to 30.1%, down from 39.5% during the same period last year.

On the evolving market mix, the ACEA said: "Hybrid-electric vehicles lead as the most popular power type choice among buyers, with plug-in hybrids consolidating their position in the market, underlining the importance of a technology-neutral pathway to decarbonisation."

Country-level trends revealed strong growth in BEV sales in France, which jumped 52.1%, and Germany, up 23.8%. However, the Netherlands and Belgium saw sharp declines of 35.4% and 11.5%, respectively.

In total, January 2026 saw 154,230 new battery-electric cars registered, while petrol vehicle registrations tumbled 28.2%.
